Svenska Volvo har en rik historia d\u00e5 det g\u00e4ller biltillverkning, som vi skrivit om tidigare h\u00e4r p\u00e5 Gentlemannaguiden<\/a>. I september fyllde en av Volvs mest klassiska modeller, Amazon, 60 \u00e5r. En sk\u00f6nhet som d\u00f6ptes efter ett mytiskt kvinnligt krigarfolk.<\/p>\n

Den f\u00f6rsta helgen i september 1956 blev Volvos nya fyrd\u00f6rrarsmodell officiell. Premi\u00e4ren skedde i svenska \u00d6rebro och den eleganta bilen skilde sig kraftigt fr\u00e5n hur man vant sig vid att en Volvo skulle se ut.<\/p>\n

Formerna var vackra och utmanade med drag av s\u00e5v\u00e4l italiensk, brittisk som amerikansk formgivning. Bakom designen stod den d\u00e5 26-\u00e5rige Jan Wilsgaard som senare skulle bli Volvos designchef under m\u00e5nga \u00e5r och ansvarig f\u00f6r bland annat 140- och 240-serierna, 700-serien och till viss del 800-serien. Jan Wilsgaard avled nyligen 86 \u00e5r gammal.<\/p>\n

Den nya bilen var f\u00f6retagets andra efterkrigsmodell efter PV444 och hade d\u00f6pts till Amason \u2013 stavat med s. Namnet kom fr\u00e5n den grekiska mytologin d\u00e4r amasonerna var krigarkvinnor. Stavningen \u00e4ndrades till det mer internationellt g\u00e5ngbara Amazon redan innan produktionen startade 1957. Oturligt nog lanserade den tyska moped- och mc-tillverkaren Kreidler vid samma tid en moped med namnet Amazone och d\u00e4rmed var namnet upptaget p\u00e5 m\u00e5nga viktiga marknader.<\/p>\n

Man n\u00e5dde en uppg\u00f6relse som gick ut p\u00e5 att Volvomodellen fick heta Amazon p\u00e5 de nordiska marknaderna. I resten av v\u00e4rlden fick standardmodellen beteckningen 121, medan 122 var Sportmodellen. Kombimodellen med standardmotor hette 221 och med sportmotor 222.<\/p>\n

Men idag \u00e4r bilen k\u00e4nd som Amazon \u00f6ver hela v\u00e4rlden.<\/p>\n

De f\u00f6rsta \u00e5rsmodellerna av Amazon var extra eleganta. \u00c5ren 1957-59 var alla exemplar tv\u00e5f\u00e4rgade. Kombinationerna som erbj\u00f6ds var svart, midnattsbl\u00e5 eller rubinr\u00f6d kaross med ljusgr\u00e5tt tak alternativt ljusgr\u00e5 kaross med svart tak. Fr\u00e5n 1959 gick det att f\u00e5 sin Amazon enf\u00e4rgad och 1961 var sista \u00e5rsmodellen f\u00f6r tv\u00e5f\u00e4rgade bilar.<\/p>\n

F\u00f6r kunden som ville ha mer kraft kom 1958 Amazon Sport. Med dubbla SU-f\u00f6rgasare och vassare kamaxel gav motorn d\u00e5 85 hk SAE.<\/p>\n

1959 blev Volvos patenterade trepunktsb\u00e4lte standard i Amazon \u2013 en v\u00e4rldsnyhet. Ingen annan s\u00e4kerhetsdetalj i bilen har betytt s\u00e5 mycket och uppskattningsvis har minst en miljon m\u00e4nniskors liv r\u00e4ddats av trepunktsb\u00e4ltet under de 57 \u00e5r som det funnits.<\/p>\n

I februari 1962 presenterades kombiversionen av Amazon. Skillnaden mot sk\u00e5pbilen Duett var stor. Amazon herrg\u00e5rdsvagn var en elegant bil med ett USA-inspirerat baklucke-arrangemang med horisontell delning.<\/p>\n

Den sportigaste versionen av Amazon blev 123 GT som l\u00e5nat motorn fr\u00e5n sportvagnen 1800S. 123 GT lanserades som 1967 \u00e5rs modell med hela 115 hk och \u00f6verv\u00e4xel. Backspeglarna satt p\u00e5 framsk\u00e4rmarna, extraljus var standardutrustning och en varvr\u00e4knare stod p\u00e5 fot ovanp\u00e5 instrumentpanelen.<\/p>\n

Produktutvecklingen av Amazon fortsatte trots att 140-serien introducerades 1966. Till 1969 \u00e5rs modell fick b\u00e5de Amazon och 140-serien den nya B20-motorn. Den st\u00f6rre volymen gav b\u00e4ttre vridmoment och n\u00e5got \u00f6kad effekt.<\/p>\n

Amazon tillverkades i 667 791 exemplar mellan 1956 och 1970 och blev d\u00e4rmed Volvos d\u00e5 mest tillverkade modell. Med Amazonen \u00e4ndrades Volvo fokus fr\u00e5n hemmamarknaden till export, totalt s\u00e5ldes 60 procent av de tillverkade bilarna utanf\u00f6r Sverige.<\/p>\n

Amazon var ocks\u00e5 den f\u00f6rsta Volvo som sattes samman utanf\u00f6r Sverige. I juni 1963 \u00f6ppnades Volvos fabrik i kanadensiska Halifax. D\u00e4r byggdes bilar f\u00f6r den nordamerikanska marknaden.<\/p>\n

Senare tillkom en sammans\u00e4ttningsfabrik i Durban i Sydafrika. Den st\u00f6rsta satsningen kom dock i belgiska Gent. Med Sverige utanf\u00f6r d\u00e5varande EEC var det viktigt att f\u00e5 in en fot i den europeiska tullunionen. 1965 startade fabriken som d\u00e5 hade kapacitet att bygga 14 000 bilar per \u00e5r.<\/p>\n

Den tredje juli 1970 tillverkades den sista Amazonen i Torslanda. Den var m\u00f6rkbl\u00e5 och k\u00f6rdes direkt till den samling av bilar som senare skulle bli Volvo Museum.<\/p>\n

10 mindre k\u00e4nda fakta om Volvo Amazon:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

1. Drygt \u00e5tta procent av de ca 297 000 Amazoner som s\u00e5ldes i Sverige finns kvar. Den vanligaste \u00e5rsmodellen \u00e4r 1966 med 4 804 registrerade exemplar. Totalt finns det fortfarande 24 282 Volvo Amazon registrerade i Sverige.<\/p>\n

2. Volvos fabriksf\u00f6rare Carl-Magnus Skogh vann 1965 Akropolisrallyt i Grekland med en 122S.<\/p>\n

3. Den svenska polisen samarbetade med Volvo och tillsammans tog man fram utrustning som senare kom p\u00e5 de vanliga produktionsbilarna. Polisbilarna hade skivbromsar, bromsservo och radiald\u00e4ck flera \u00e5r f\u00f6re de vanliga produktionsbilarna. Polisens Amazoner var utrustade med en bakrutefl\u00e4kt och vid ratten satt en knapp som kopplade ihop vindrutespolningen med den h\u00f6gsta torkarhastigheten.<\/p>\n

4. USA:s tidigare utrikesminister och f\u00f6rsvarschef Colin Powell har ett stort bilintresse. Han har \u00e4gt flera klassiska Volvo, bland annat en Amazonkombi fr\u00e5n 1966. N\u00e4r han avgick som f\u00f6rsvarschef 1993 fick han en Amazon med stort renoveringsbehov i present av president Bill Clinton och vicepresident Al Gore.<\/p>\n

5. I 1963 \u00e5rs Gen\u00e8vekatalog presenterades Volvo 122S Cabriolet \u2013 som upphovsman stod den belgiske karossbyggaren Jaques Coune. Det var en snygg konvertering med d\u00f6rrar utan rutramar, d\u00f6rr\u00f6ppningar som var mjukt rundade i bakkant och bakljusen var vinklade fram\u00e5t. I katalogen kunde man f\u00e5 intrycket att det handlade om en serietillverkad bil, men Volvo hade inget att g\u00f6ra med initiativet och det blev bara fyra exemplar.<\/p>\n

6. Reklammannen Amil Gargano i New York tog sig 1962 an Volvo. Han kom fram till att Volvo var en bil som t\u00e5lde n\u00e4stan allt och det var m\u00e4rkets USP \u2013 unique selling point. I en reklamfilm fick man se en Amazon under h\u00e5rdk\u00f6rning p\u00e5 grusv\u00e4gar. Reklamfilmens payoff \u00e4r lika tydlig som om\u00f6jlig idag: \u201dAnd you can drive it like you hate it. Cheaper than psychiatry\u201d.<\/p>\n

7. Det fanns planer p\u00e5 att s\u00e4tta en V8 i Amazon, en utvecklad version av en lastbilsmotor. Fem prototypmotorer ska ha byggts, men i slut\u00e4ndan ans\u00e5g Volvoledningen att en V8 inte var r\u00e4tt f\u00f6r Amazon, inte minst med tanke p\u00e5 att den inte fanns n\u00e5gon sexcylindrig version och hoppet till fr\u00e5n en fyra till en V8 skulle ha blivit f\u00f6r stort.<\/p>\n

8. Amazonerna som byggdes i Volvos sammans\u00e4ttningsfabrik i kanadensiska Halifax marknadsf\u00f6rdes under namnet Volvo Canadian.<\/p>\n

9. N\u00e4r Volvos modellprogram breddats med Amazon kunde Volvo \u00e5terta positionen som Sveriges mest s\u00e5lda bilm\u00e4rke 1958. En position man h\u00e5llit varje \u00e5r sedan dess.<\/p>\n
